For the first time in the history of the club, 2 metro j5/6 teams played home league fixtures in front of a packed Rocky Stadium. I’ll leave Jeff to talk about the girls, but for the Boys they managed to finish just on top winning 1-0 against a well organised and impressive team from North Coast Raiders.
The Metro Boys lead today by Ethan Lamont contained no fewer than 7 boys who were playing their first Metro League match.
The packed crowd were entertained by some thrilling end to end hockey, with forwards, Kai, Ashley, Mitchell, Bailey and Slade, cutting through the well organised NCR defence. Today’s midfield of Conor, Ethan, Slade and Alex, worked tirelessly to ensure the forwards got the ball they needed and supported the defence when asked. However real praise must go to the defence, who showed the older sides how to play. Samuel, Jimmy and Ben really stepped up from last year – and new boy Patrick, never gave his right wing any space to move. Felix (the CAT) made sure the opposition went home empty handed, with some fine agile saves and is a real find for goalkeeper this year.
In a close game such as this one mistake or piece of skill can often win and so it proved for Rockingham, with another new boy Mitchell in the perfect spot to finish off an excellent cross from Ethan and shot from Slade.
A big thanks to the umpires for allowing the play to flow. If the hockey stays as good as this we may have to think about charging spectators…..
